KANO (AFP) – Three people were shot dead while four others, including two soldiers, were wounded Saturday when suspected Islamists sect opened fire at a wedding in the city of Maiduguri, the army said.
The suspected gunmen fired shots sporadically when they sensed that the wedding venue was under surveillance by troops of the special Joint Task Force (JTF), the force’s spokesman in Maiduguri, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa said.

Consequently, the JTF mounted a surveillance around the wedding venue, he said.
The sect members at the ceremony, “sensing danger, opened fire sporadically on the surveillance team and the area. This led to the death of three civilians. Two (were) wounded from the fire of the terrorists,” he said.
Two soldiers sustained gunshot injuries while two of the suspected Islamists were arrested, he said.
A vehicle used by the attackers, some arms and ammunition were recovered, he said, without giving further details.
In the statement, the JTF advised members of the public to avoid wedding events organised by the group.
Gunmen suspected to be members of the sect on Friday killed seven people in separate attacks and freed all inmates from a local jail in Kumshe town in northeastern Borno state, of which Maiduguri is the capital.
They attacked the jail, killing two warders and setting free all the prisoners, state police spokesman Samuel Tizhe told AFP, without specifying their number.
The freed prison inmates have not been re-arrested, Tizhe told AFP on Saturday.
