Jonathan condemns attack on BUK

President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned Sunday’s attack on the Bayero University Kano chaplaincy and urged Nigerians not to succumb to persistent terrorist attacks.
Jonathan, who made the condemnation in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, in Abuja on Monday, also urged Nigerians to remain united in condemning and rejecting terrorism.
The statement reads, “The president deeply regrets this utterly heinous descent to new depths of calumny by the perpetrators of the attack on one of the nation’s citadels of academic endeavour and its members.
“The president urges Nigerians to remain united in their condemnation and rejection of the terrorists, who have shown even more clearly by their latest attacks on the media and the academic community, that their objective is to destabilise the nation and its vital institutions.
“The president conveys his deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of members of the Bayero University community who lost their lives in the attack.”
The statement said the Federal Government was doing everything possible “to ensure that Nigeria overcomes the problem.”

Five killed as suicide bombers target Taraba CP’s convoy

A round of suicide bomb attacks targeted at the convoy of the Taraba State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Sule, on Monday led to the killing of five persons and the destruction of a portion of the Taraba State Ministry of Finance in the state capital, Jalingo, and a nearby market.
It also consumed valuable documents, vehicles and property.

Bukola Saraki surrenders to police

 

Former governor of Kwara State, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on Monday afternoon surrendered to the Nigeria Police Force at its headquarters in Abuja.

Poliec sources confirmed to journalists that Saraki appeared at the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday afternoon.
He had said in a statement on Saturday that he would surrender himself on Monday.
Saraki, who is a sitting senator, had been sought by the Special Fraud Unit of the NPF based in Lagos over an alleged N9.7 billion loan issue.
The police said that as governor, Saraki obtained a loan from the defunct Intercontinental Bank Plc through a proxy company, Joy Petroleum, owned by his late aide, Matthew Obahor.
But Saraki had said he had no link to the said loan and that he had no relationship with the company, Joy Petroleum.
The SFU spokesperson, Joy Isinume, told a news website, Premium Times, that it would not hesitate to use maximum force to arrest Saraki.

Senator Bukola Saraki declared wanted by police over N21billion ($133million) loan scam

Former governor of Kwara State and current Senator of the FRN representing Kwara Central; has been declared wanted by the Special Fraud Unit of the NigerianPolice Force over a N21 billion bank loan fraud at the defunct InterContinental Bank of Nigeria.

Following an Abuja Federal High Court’s clearance for his arrest, a warrant was issued but the senator went into hiding and is yet to surface.

The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested two students for allegedly killing a final year student at the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti.

Bomb blast at newspaper office in Abuja and another

There has been a loud explosion at the offices of a major newspaper in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, witnesses have said.

It is not clear what caused the blast at ThisDay newspaper, which occurred at around 11:30 GMT.

There are also reports of an explosion in the city of Kaduna in northern Nigeria - also near the offices of a newspaper.

An unknown number of people have been injured, witnesses says.

Nigeria’s oil deposits may dry up in 2054 – expert

Chairman of Petroleum Technology Development Fund Professorial Chair of the University of Jos, Prof. Emmanuel Ogezi, has predicted that Nigeria’s oil deposits may dry up completely in 40 years with the present rate of oil exploitation.
He said the only way to increase the country’s oil reserves is through extensive research to discover more oil deposits.
Ogezi stated this while presenting a paper entitled, ‘Geology, Petroleum, Mineral and Environmental Resources of the Benue Trough, Nigeria-Opportunities and Challenges,’ at the PTDF professorial chair endowment in Geology seminar at the University of Jos on Friday.

Woman gives birth to a 38cm worm

IN a case of suspected witchcraft, a 38-year-old woman from Bulawayo's North End suburb gave birth to a 38cm long worm on Sunday morning. The woman, Ms Anna Mbizi, was five months pregnant when she allegedly experienced labour-like contractions and gave birth to a worm in her bathroom.

The bizarre incident happened on Sunday and her boyfriend has reportedly abandoned her.

When reporters visited her at her home yesterday, she seemed weak and was holding what was left of the worm, which was placed in a tin.

One killed as Barca, Chelsea fans clash in Lagos …two die celebrating

One person was killed at a pub in Lagos on Tuesday night after a fight broke out between fans of Barcelona and Chelsea football clubs, while two others suspected to be Chelsea fans drove dangerously after the match resulting in a fatal accident.

PUNCH Metro learnt that John Idoko, a 23-year-old boy, was stabbed to death at a makeshift pub at Shiro Bus Stop, Boundary Road, Shasha.

It was learnt that the outcome of the football match, which favoured Chelsea FC, did not go down well with some Barcelona’s supporters.

Bomb explosion rocks Jos football viewing centre

An unspecified number of people sustained injuries on Tuesday nite in a bomb blast close to a football viewing centre in Tudun Wada, Jos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that most of the injuries resulted from stampede as the soccer enthusiasts ran for safety.

Plateau State Commissioner of Police Dipo Ayeni, who confirmed the incident said that no death was recorded.

“Those injured have been rushed to the Plateau Specialist hospital,” he said.

NAN reports that the bomb went off by the road side, minutes after the end of the UEFA semi final match between Chelsea FC and Barcelona FC.

An eye witness, Hosea Daniel, a security man with NAN, said that among the injured were petty traders selling by the roadside.

Tuesday’s bomb is the third in Jos, targeted at soccer fans during high profile European matches. (NAN)

Student squanders school fees over Madrid victory

A Real Madrid F.C. fan in Abakaliki on Saturday night squandered his school fee while celebrating the team’s victory over Barcelona F.C.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, recalls that Real beat Barcelona 2-1 in an away match in the Spanish La Liga, to earn a seven-point lead over the latter.

The fan, Ekene Emigo, a student of Ebonyi State University, ordered food and drinks for football fans at Kingol Guest House soccer viewing centre at Uyanwa Street, Abakaliki.

Emigo told NAN that he spent more than N70, 000 on drinks and food for other fans, adding that although that was his school fee, he did not regret the action.

He said with the victory, Real had avenged its four seasons nightmare in the hands of Barcelona

7 year old Pennsylvanian 1st grader Annie Clark who has no hands and writes by wedging a pencil between her two arms, has won a penmanship contest – earning a trophy and $1,000 to boot.

The contest organized by Zaner – Bloser Inc recognizes disabled students who have exceptional handwriting skills.

Her proud dad told reporters:

“Annie has always been very, very determined, very self-sufficient in dressing herself and feeding herself. She can ride a bike and she swims. She is just determined that there’s nothing she can’t do.”

Born to a family of nine children, Annie is a sister to five other siblings adopted from China. Most of Annie’s siblings – including children born biologically to her parents – also have disabilities

Female Student At Benson Idahosa University Invites Dreaded Ayelala juju To Fish Out Thief

The incident took place at Benson Idahosa University, Benin when a female student of the said institution claimed that her Brazilian hair was stolen from her room sometime last week. She returned from lectures on that fateful day, to find out that her N75k Brazilian hair, which she’d planned to fix that weekend for a wedding was missing in action.

After asking her roommates and everyone denied taking the weave, the female student resorted to diabolical means to get her weave back. She invited the bini juju group called Ayelala to come to the school to curse and fish out whoever stole her weave.

100 passengers escape air disaster

What would have been a disaster at the Margret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, Cross River State, was averted by the expertise of the pilot after a bird strike caused one of the engines of a Boeing 737 / 800 series to malfunction.

Panic in P’Harcourt as rocket hits building

There was panic and confusion in Port Harcourt on Friday as a rocket accidentally went off from an aircraft and hit a building on 98, Woji Road in the Rivers State capital.

The incident, which took place at about 7.20 am, prompted residents to abandon their homes for fear of being hit by a missile.

It was learnt that the rocket came off an aircraft, which was carrying some personnel of the Nigerian Air Force on a routine flight.

Some passersby, who came to witness the impact of the rocket on the one-storey building, expressed shock when they saw the holes the ammunition created on the building.

The impact of the missile, which produced a deafening noise, also damaged the rear windscreen of a Nissan Primera with Registration Number Lagos DX 879 KRD, parked by the side of the building.

The owner of the building that is still under construction, Mr. Eric Chioma, said everybody ran helter-skelter, adding that the impact of the rocket shook the foundations of many buildings within the area.

He said, “The rocket hit the last floor of the building and created big holes outside and inside the building. Many people left their homes and ran away when they heard the sound.

“We were all afraid. But we believed that it was not a bomb from the Boko Haram group. The anti-bomb disposal people were here to remove the remains of the object.

“Our fear is that the building may collapse in future. So, we want the government to bring in experts that will inspect the house to see if it will collapse because the sound was too much.”

Another resident, who identified himself as Chizi, urged Nigerian Air Force to always carry out its routine flights outside residential areas.

Air Force Commander, Air Vice Marshal Abba Zannah, said at a joint news briefing that the development was a rare and isolated one that could have occurred as a result of mechanical, electrical or human error.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhammed Indabawa, and the Director of the State Security Service in the state, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje, were present at the briefing.

Zanna, however, appealed to members of the public to go about their businesses without fear, adding that the cause of the incident was being investigated.

Ibori to be sentenced tomorrow

Former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, is due to be sentenced by a London court tomorrow and Tuesday after pleading guilty on February 27 to 10 charges of fraud and money laundering.

His assets acquired with the fraud proceeds will, consequently be confiscated and returned to Nigeria.

Ibori, governor of the oil-rich Delta State between 1999 and 2007, opted for a plea bargain with his British prosecutors in the hope of receiving a lighter sentence.

Ocampo withdraws for Okonjo-Iweala as W/Bank names president Monday

Colombian economist Jose Antonio Ocampo withdrew Friday from the race to lead the World Bank, calling the process a “political exercise” unrelated to candidate merits, Colombian media reported.

The former Colombian finance minister also blamed lack of formal support from his own government, saying that had hindered his ability to garner the backing of other countries, according to a statement published by the Colombian media.

Jonathan signs budget, vows to sack lobbyists

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday signed the 2012 federal government budget of N4.697 trillion and threatened to sack heads of Ministries, Departments and Parastatals that lobbied the National Assembly and got their budgets increased.

The Aggregate revenue estimate stood at N3.561 billion, leaving a budget deficit of about N1.136 trillion, representing 2.85 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product, GDP .

Fashola condemns road blockade during Jonathan’s visit

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Friday described the blockade of roads and resultant gridlocks in parts of the state following Thursday’s visit of the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, as an infringement on the right of the residents.

He said the residents, whose taxes provided the infrastructure that made Patience to have a smooth ride, had their business activities put on hold while the blockade lasted.
