AWKA—GUNMEN,numbering seven yesterday, attacked Amichi police station in Nnewi South Local Government Area and injured a police officer in the process. About 10 vehicles packed within and around the police premises were also riddled with bullets.
The hoodlums were said to have stormed the police station at about 2.30 am and after sporadic shooting, released two suspects believed to be their members and also allegedly made away with 14 AK-47 riffles belonging to the police.
It was gathered that they stormed the police station in a black coloured SUV Pajero car and fired gun shots for about 40 minutes and when they realized that only three policemen were on duty, they rushed to the cell and released their colleagues who were being detained there.
Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka could not be reached for comments yesterday as his telephone was off and the new state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bala Nasarawa, who replaced the new Assistant Inspector General of Police, Muktari Ibrahim, had not returned to the state as he was said to have gone back to his former state to hand over.
Also, a gang of four people suspected to be kidnappers on Tuesday stormed the popular Aroma junction in Awka in a Golf car and kidnapped a driver who was in an ash coloured Pathfinder jeep.
The identity of the driver had not been known as the time of filing this report. They were said to have fired sporadically in the air to scare people before taking the driver away.
Vanguard gathered that the kidnapping of the driver could be a mistaken identity as their main target was the owner of a popular supermarket in the area.
