Panic in N’Assembly as fire razes office

A fire incident at the National Assembly on Thursday destroyed documents and some disused chairs.
The incident, which occurred in a tearoom at the Annex II section of the legislative building, was immediately contained by members of staff.
The incident is the second this year. The first occurred when fire gutted a section of the office of the Clerk of the National Assembly on January 14.

Eyewitnesses said the fire started at 11am on the second floor of the building housing the Accounts and Legal departments.
Although men of the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service successfully put out the fire, a number of vital documents had been destroyed.
Director of FCT Fire Service, Sani Saidu, who spoke to newsmen at the scene, blamed the fire outbreak on power fluctuation.
It was not clear what caused the fire, but some workers suspected electrical spark.
The tea room, marked Rm2.203, had been converted to a store where old files, documents and chairs were kept.
“The weight of the documents on the electrical fittings in the room might have caused the fire”, a member of staff, who did not want to be quoted, told THE PUNCH on Thursday.
It was learnt that workers in the adjoining offices noticed smoke coming out of the room and raised the alarm.
Their response brought the situation under control, as they reportedly used water and fire extinguishers to put out the fire.
The Director of Information and Publications to the National Assembly, Mr. Monima Daminabo, however, said the incident had not come to his notice as at 4.54pm.
