Mentally unstable man rapes 2-year-old

A mentally unstable man, in Lagos, raped a two-year-old girl.

People in the Itire neighbourhood where the incident occurred reported that the unidentified man was passing along the street, then entered into the victim's house. Upon seeing nobody around except the two-year-old, he went ahead to rape her.

The girl's cries attracted the attention of a neighbour who burst in and caught the rapist in the act. The neighbour raised an alarm and called on other neighbours who seized the man and descended heavily on him with blows and curses.

The molester would have been lynched by the mob if not for the intervention of the police.

The girl was then taken to the hospital for treatment few hours later while the man was arrested, but later released on grounds of mental-instability.

Alfa Yusuf, an Islamic cleric on the street, said: "It was a disheartening incident and should not be pried into. It should be left alone. We have told neighbours and the police not to make the incident a public one, because the girl is young and we do not know what can happen to her in future; I am talking about her reputation."
