Easter: SSS uncovers plot to bomb worshippers

...discovers 60 explosives, arrests 5 Boko Haram members ....US, UK warn citizens against visit to 7 states

All may not be well with the Christian community this Easter season in Gombe State following the discovery yesterday of about 60 explosives at BCGA area of Gombe metropolis waiting to explode.

A source said the explosives were aimed at disrupting the Easter celebrations in the state.

Five persons suspected to be Boko Haram Islamic sect members were arrested by the SSS operatives over the intended attack.

Gombe State SSS Director, Mr. Bitrus Asha, who spoke to journalists on the outskirts of Gombe town where men of the Police Anti Bomb Squad Yola were assembled to detonate the explosives, said that the suspects were rounded up after a tip-off.

Asha said one of the suspects escaped during the raid and that the fleeing member must have informed others in another points where the SSS men immediately stormed and recovered some explosives but no arrest was made.

Asked whether the suspects were from Gombe, the SSS director stated that it was too early to establish that as investigation was still ongoing. “It is only investigation that could prove to us whether they are Boko Haram sect members or not.”

He said, however, that they were definitely people who did not mean well for the peace and tranquility of the state.

It will be recalled that rumour had been making the round in the state capital over an impending attack by the Islamic sect.

According to a resident, who would not want his name in print, “We learnt that the Boko Haram members have an unfinished business in Gombe which they intended to carry out during the Easter period.”

As at the time of filing this report yesterday, tension had gripped the residents as they were seen scampering for their lives, while others closed their shops and other business places.

The Acting Inspector- General of Police, IGP, Mr. Muhammed Abubakar, has however directed Zonal and State Commands of the force to provide adequate security to all places of worship during the celebrations.
